Co-Curricular Experiences

Excel Academy is dedicated to providing not only a solid academic foundation, but also enrichment experiences that prepare scholars to succeed in high school, college and beyond.  We believe that co-curricular courses promote the benefits of a wider curriculum to our scholars.

Our 2014-2015 co-curricular course offerings are

Art – Visual arts strives to provide an inviting outlet for positive self-expression. Scholars also engage in intriguing collaborative activities with an infusion of art history and creative production.

Health and Wellness – Students comprehend concepts related to health promotion through identifying the life stages and systems of the human body. Students acquire skills to enhance their emotional health and relationships with others.Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies to improve health and performance. Students learn the importance of how nutrition affects personal health, academic achievement, fitness and performance, and brain function through classifying foods by nutritional content and nutritional value.

Latin – Excel scholars learn to read, write, and speak the Latin language. More than one-half of all English words (especially terms used in literature, mathematics and science) come from Latin! Scholars improve their understanding of English and build skills to learn other foreign languages.

Music – Excel Academy scholars participate in a fun yet rigorous music curriculum.  Pre-K through 3rd grade Excel scholars learn to read, perform, and understand music through a variety of traditional European methods, including Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Orff-Schulwerk.  Excel Academy hosts two annual music concerts and every child participates.  Fourth and Fifth grade scholars (LEAD) have the option to join the Excel Academy band and our two choirs, the Excel Academy Concert Choir and the Excel Academy Show Choir.  Our Show Choir performs for various fundraisers and events in the DC area.

P.E. –  Physical Education for our preschool through third grade girls includes a high energy infusion of cooperative learning, physical fitness concepts, and Zumba Kids. Excel scholars are able to utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.
